Urban Decay Book of Shadows III

I have been lemming for Urban Decay's Naked palette for ages but as the title of the post shows, this is not quite about that. Last week I made an impulsive decision to spend the Amazon gift certificate sent by my in-laws for my birthday back in July on the Urban Decay Book of Shadows III. Instead of the Naked palette! Horrors!

It was impulsive as I had only spent an hour or so one afternoon suddenly having this deep desire to grab this palette. Then there was additional cost to ship it as Sephora does not ship internationally and it had to be done via Borderlinx. But everything went smoothly and it arrived today via DHL.

There's a whole flip-top section with LED lights of the NYC skyline. It's a cute design but it does not really stay open unless you hold it up. Besides that I can't see much use out of it despite the mirror at the back. It does snap closed very securely but leaves the ribbon dangling out the side.

Anyway it's not about all that it's about the insides! In the slide out drawer underneath there are16 eye shadow shades including 7 new shades, a 24/7 Glide-On eye pencil in Zero (black), a 24/7 Glide-On eye pencil in Ransom (iridescent purple) and a travel sized eye shadow primer potion.

(with flash - post swatch)

These were swatched with no primer or base.

(no flash, incandescent light)

Do click to enlarge, I tried to not resize them too much so you can see the colors up close. The no flash pic isn't great, sorry about that. Also swatched them out of order as I had started too far down the forearm then ran out of space. Other bloggers have better pics of swatches and the shades that can be found with a quick google search :)

(flash, incandescent light)

Looks gorgeous with flash doesn't it? The squiggles up top are the the 24/7 eyeliner in Zero and Ransom. The latter will be really interesting to try out.

Favorites just off the first look are Kush, Last Call, Rockstar and Haight. I'll have to try the colors out this weekend. Some of them are a little too shimmery so a little afraid of that especially as an 'older' woman that shouldn't wear so much shimmer.

Speaking of which I hate Midnight Cowboy - it came with a Best of Urban Decay set. On swatching Midnight Cowboy Rides Again with the BoS3 it's the same thing, amazing amount of fallout. Everyone complains about the inclusion of Midnight Cowboy (and derivaties?) in palettes so at least it's not only me that has so much trouble making it work. Even J mentions the glitter fallout on the face saying I look like I'm 17! Yeah .. it's not in a good way.

(insert from back of box)

The Urban Decay: Book of Shadows III retails for US$54. It is limited edition and is selling out fast according to UD website.

With Borderlinx there was an extra sales tax to Ohio from Sephora, added to their shipping cost (DHL+fuel surcharge) so the total cost was about RM280. It made real good use of the US$50 gift from the in-laws :D Online sprees are bringing these in for about RM235 while Sephora Singapore down south should have them in by early November.

There is still a small regret with not getting the Naked palette but then there's always next month isn't there? :D Naked is permanent while the Book of Shadows is not so do keep that in mind.

Here's a comparison of the Urban Decay Book of Shadows III vs Urban Decay Naked Palette.
  1. 16 shades vs 14 shades

  2. 0.8g/0.03oz each vs 1.3g/0.05oz each

  3. Both have 2 x 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils (0.8g vs 0.5g)

  4. 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Ransom (purple) vs Whiskey (brown)

  5. 7 new shades vs 5 new shades

  6. Midnight Cowboy Rides Again vs no Midnight Cowboy

  7. Both have travel-sized primer potion, 3.7ml

  8. Bulky as 3/4 is the flip-top section with the LED thingamajig vs compact easy to travel

  9. Price: US$54 vs US$44
There's no real winner in my opinion as they are both unique palettes that stand out on their own.

OMG!! After having UD naked i was lemming for this..But the price was indeed steep and it's bulky..

Yep most of the bulk is the flip top section. I was a little afraid that it would have trouble going through customs cos of all the blinky electronic thingamajig! Phew. Glad they didn't think it was a bomb.

The shades have more variety of colors, 16 vs 14 also but they are a little smaller than Naked i.e. 0.8g vs 1.3g. Price US$54 vs 44 so paying for the 'limited'-ness of it plus the novelty of the design perhaps?

Am saving up for Naked anyways and take a trip down to Singapore to pick it up later this year. Think everyone is sick about me gushing over theirs :)

A palette worthy of being drooled after.. LOL

Do come up with a EOTD when you're free with this :D

@hevn - will give EOTD a shot this weekend :)

Hi there, I'm thinking of getting it from online forum for the price of rm234(inclusive of international shipping but without local postage). is it really worth the price? the US currency now is quite weak so i was wondering whether the price is expensive to buy with that kind of price? thanks!

OH NO!!!!!! you have this!!!! I want! I want! I want it so badly! I can't get enough of eyeshadows! And Urban Decay definitely drives me crazy!

But I got no money :(

@anonymous - That's a good price. I only shipped direct (RM50 more than your price) because of the Amazon gift voucher. It may be a little cheaper when it gets to Singapore but not much.

For example Naked palette RM136 (US44), Sephora Spore RM172(SGD73), local spree is RM180. Sephora S'pore has not announced the price but it will be more expensive than Naked as it goes for US55. It will probably be close to the online spree price. Ah so long-winded but hope that helps.

@nicole - there's always next month :)

Thanks dear for the explanation. Will definitely think about is as I just bought some stuff from the latest collection of Paul and Joe's and Mac's VV. Plus the holiday collections will be here soon-oh I'm going to be soo broke! *sigh*

Hi there,
I'm wondering do you know how long can the LED lasts for this BoS? does it lit up well? I've ordered from an online store and I was asked whether i would like to take a damaged LED (not working) at a slightly discounted price (minus around rm18). what do you recommend? should i take with or without the working LED? your opinion is much appreciated. thanks!

@Shaz - to me it's not important, i've not opened the top section even though I have used the eyeshadows daily for over a week. It's cool to look at but not of any use. The lights do not frame the mirror, just those 3 buildings and it is not bright enough to be of any use.

I'd get it if I were you :) The products inside is what's more important. Good luck.
